A former New South Wales Premier says Australia’s immigration targets have “over-shot the mark”, amid calls for an inquiry into population growth.

Federal Liberal Senator Dean Smith wants the issue to be looked into, as the country’s population is on track to reach 25 million by next month.

Former Premier Bob Carr tells Steve Price Gladys Berejiklian must speak out on the matter.

“My challenge to the existing Premier, to Gladys, is to speak out strongly on this as well.

“If she sends a message to Canberra then it’s going to be as powerful as the one that I sent in 2001.

“And Canberra will have to adjust its policies already by setting up a Senate committee.”
