During Drive, Chris O’Keefe received a heart-wrenching phone call from listener Colette about her brother’s time in the Vietnam War as a conscripted medic.

Australia is commemorating 50 years since the end of its involvement in the Vietnam War, one of the wars where veterans weren’t welcomed back with victory parades or the love of the nation. They were hounded, attacked, and made to feel ashamed.

Only recently has Australia begun to give veterans of the conflict the respect and care they deserve. The emotional, raw story brings to light the immense suffering and shame veterans felt when they returned home, and how it affected not just the veterans, but also their families.
