The President of the Australian Medical Association says both major political parties are responsible for winding back Medicare funding.

Labor has recruited high profile former AMA president doctor Brian Owler to contest a Sydney seat in the next federal election.

The Opposition Leader has already dubbed Doctor Owler, “Mr Medicare”, as he prepares to make health a key election battleground.

But AMA President Doctor Tony Bartone tells Ross Greenwood both sides of politics have pulled funding from Medicare.

“When we look at the Medicare system, it’s in need of a significant funding solution, but it’s in need of a significant vision regarding a universal health care system that is the envy of the majority of countries around the world.”
