Mosman Council votes against Aboriginal land claim

Article image for Mosman Council votes against Aboriginal land claim

Prime real estate on Sydney’s North Shore has been subject to an Aboriginal Land Claim, which was first made in 2009.

The claim, for land at Balmoral Beach, first revealed by Chris O’Keefe on 2GB Drive, is for 2,500 square metres of land and was made under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, not the federal Native Title Act.

Claims for land under the act can only be made if the land is not being used, which is disputed by Mosman Council.

Roy Bendall, ousted as Deputy Mayor on Tuesday night, joined John Stanley to explain why Mosman Council voted against the proposal.

He also told 2GB Nights that councillors were taken by surprise that the request was made confidential.
