Minister’s brumby defence on shaky ground as horseman speaks out

Mark Levy

The NSW Environment Minister’s claim that brumby shootings have not resumed is being disputed as a second horseman speaks up.

Shannon Byrne says he discovered three dead brumbies near a walking track at Gavels Hut 4 in Nungar, which he estimates were killed as recently as last week.

He contacted The Ray Hadley Morning Show after the discovery was discussed on yesterday’s show.

“One was a black colt, he’d been probably dead for about three or four days,” he told Ray.

“The other two, which was a bay mare and a bay yearling, they’d been dead for going on about a fortnight, by the state of their coat.”

Mr Byrne’s account would appear to discredit a response given yesterday by Environment Minister James Griffin, who says no shootings have taken place since September 8.

Mr Griffin has suggested Mr Byrne’s photographs were “old and from before the pause occurred”.

“I don’t know a lot about it but I do know two things,” Ray said. “I haven’t been there and neither has the Minister, but this bloke has.”
