Minister defends $300m Australia Post and NBN bonuses against Labor ‘hypocrisy’

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher has defended millions of dollars in bonuses awarded to government business executives.

Over the past two years the taxpayer-owned Australia Post and NBN businesses have handed out $300 million in personal bonuses to employees, including management.

Mr Fletcher told Jim Wilson bonuses are “an issue of judgement and balance”, which have recently been scrutinised under a review process.

“We don’t want to see bonuses being widely used in the public service and in government business enterprises.

“I would make the point that the Labor Party’s been jumping up and down about this, but they set up the National Broadband Network company.

“We tend to see from Labor a little bit of hypocrisy on this.”
