Mayor explains why Leichhardt is turning into a ‘ghost town’

Michael McLaren

The Inner West Council Mayor says it requires attention from the NSW government to help revitalise Leichhardt.

The once famed Norton Street in Leichhardt has many empty shopfronts while an apartment on William Street has been left derelict for over two years.

Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne told Deborah Knight some landlords are using the untenanted properties for tax purposes.

“Get the Planning Minister on here, get the Treasurer on here. I’m not going to take personal responsibility for the fact that the tax system is heavily favoured for landlords in NSW.

“I don’t think the state government can get off the hook when they’re the ones who oversee the tax and regulatory and planning system that allows this to happen.”
