Mayor accuses Premier of ‘inventing’ excuses to snub Leichhardt Oval upgrade

The Inner West Mayor has hit back at the NSW Premier as the back-and-forth continues over the future of Leichhardt Oval.

Darcy Byrne has warned the sports ground will likely close to elite sport from next year.

The ground has been the home of the Wests Tigers for 90 years.

The NSW Premier told Ben Fordham yesterday that the upgrading of Leichhardt Oval is a council responsibility.

But Mayor Byrne said the self-proclaimed Wests Tigers fan needs to help save the oval.

“There’s not a single suburban ground upgrade that has ever taken place without government support, so the rule that the Premier articulated yesterday is one he’s invented and he only applies it to Leichhardt Oval,” he told Ben.
