A man is accused of setting fire to his own home in an attempt to murder his neighbours.

Firefighters were called to a unit block on Portland Crescent at Maroubra just before 6pm.

A ground floor apartment was engulfed in flames as emergency services evacuated nearby residents.

Once the blaze was brought under control, the Bomb Squad was called in to sweep the scene.

A 30-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital with minor injuries.

He’s since been released and arrested by police.

He’s facing several charges, including destroy building by fire with intent to murder.

Police also found an unregistered gun.

The man has been refused bail and is expected to appear in Waverley Local Court today.
