Man dies in Redfern unit fire despite heroic effort from firefighters
A man has died in a unit fire at Redfern this morning.
Emergency services were called to the George Street apartment block at about 4am after neighbours reported hearing screaming coming from a top-floor unit.
Firefighters pulled a 50-year-old man from the burning building and immediately began first aid.

He was rushed to hospital but couldn’t be revived.
About 45 people have been evacuated from the complex and surrounding units as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
Once the building has been declared safe, investigators will move in to determine the cause of the fire.
