A 26-year-old man has been charged with terrorism offences after he threatened to kill police while armed with a knife.

It’s alleged the man made threats about wanting to kill police, claiming he wanted to be a martyr during his arrest in Surry Hills last year.

He was initially charged with being armed with intent to assault police and steal from persons.

Police have laid further charges of “possessing a thing connected with a terrorist act and doing an act in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act”.

Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command Assistant Commissioner, Mick Willings, says police are doing everything they can to stop the next attack from happening.

“It’s a reality that there are people in the community who seek to cause harm to us, and police remain a target.”

The accused man is in custody and will appear in court on Thursday 8 February.
