A major incident has occurred in Sydney, with police shutting down roads to escort a critically injured toddler to hospital.

At around 11:20 Mark Levy received reports a young child had been hit by a car on Canterbury Road at Campsie.

Mark then received a call from Gordon saying up to 20 police cars were rushing into the M5 tunnel citybound.

Another caller reported seeing undercover police officers running between traffic approaching the tunnel with a major operation underway.

It was then confirmed police were clearing traffic for an ambulance carrying the toddler to Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick.

Police have since provided an update, saying the child died despite the best efforts of paramedics.

The 43-year-old female driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
