Lifeline marks 60th birthday as helpline reports unprecedented demand

Mark Levy

Lifeline has offered millions of Australians somewhere to turn in the six decades since it first launched but there’s more demand for the service than ever.

On March 16, 1963, the Lifeline Crisis Support hotline went live, taking more than 100 calls in its first day of operation.

“You couldn’t possibly quantify the number of lives we’ve saved but we do it every day,” Lifeline Australia chairman John Brogden told Ray Hadley.

“You said, Ray, a hundred calls 60 years ago; today we’ll probably take 3,800 calls.”
