Lane Cove councillors have been divided by a move to permanently ban screenings of the Melbourne Cup.

Under the motion, screenings will no longer be allowed on council property, including the Plaza and Canopy.

Six out of nine councillors supported the motion, with only Lane Cove’s three Liberal councillors opposing the move.

Councillor Scott Bennison told Ray Hadley while the move has gone out for community consultation, “it’s not to say that the screenings won’t still be cancelled”.

“It’s just a silly idea in my view,” he said.
