Water Minister grilled after woman killed at Penrith Weir

Article image for Water Minister grilled after woman killed at Penrith Weir

Tragedies continue to brew at Penrith Weir after another boat incident was reported yesterday afternoon.

Days after a 33-year-old woman died on Australia Day, another group of boaters were involved in a near-tragedy on the Nepean River in Penrith.

As boaters are in the water, fast currents can drag them close to the weir, and due to no signage being present, they end up capsizing.

Emily Feszczuk from the Western Weekender has told Jim Wilson, “Right near the weir where the buoys should be, there is no signage”.

It’s a huge danger to boaters who do not know the area with Emily saying, “because there isn’t a large presence of warning signs, they are making the mistake”.

Callers into Jim’s program also confirmed the lack of signage at the Weir.

Daniel who is a member of the Nepean Rowing Club told Jim Wilson, “There haven’t been any warning signs, they would have washed down when we had the major floods in March”.

“There buoys aren’t there.”

Dennis a local near the river also told Jim, “Those buoys have never been replaced.”
