The Independent candidate for Wentworth says the past 48 hours have been “nail-biting”, as her victory was cast into doubt.

Doctor Kerryn Phelps believed she had won the crucial seat on Saturday after the Liberals conceded defeat.

On on Sunday, postal votes put Dr Phelps’ win in doubt, but she’s now expected to win comfortably.

On a two-party preferred basis, Dr Phelps has secured 51 per cent of the votes. Liberal candidate Dave Sharma holds 48 per cent.

But the Independent tells Chris Smith she doesn’t want to get ahead of herself just yet.

“It was a very nervous, nail-biting day. It was a white-knuckle ride,” she says.

“I’m just waiting until we get that final result. It’s just important to make sure that every vote is counted.”

If she wins the seat, Dr Phelps tells Chris she plans on holding “the government to account”.

“I would support good legislation, I would reject bad legislation, I would look at modifying legislation that needed to be improved.”
