A junior footy club has been stripped of their season’s match points and banned from this week’s final fixture due to an administrative error made by a volunteer.

The Kellyville Rouse Hill Magpies Under 17 side, which plays in division three, finished the season as minor premiers and were due to play a final this weekend, however it emerged that a volunteer had registered six extra players at the start of the season.

The mistake was picked up by another club and passed on to AFL NSW/ACT, which docked the club of their points and banned them from playing this week’s game despite the error not affecting which kid’s could play.

Kellyville Rouse Hill AFL President, Steve Stewart, said the club tried to appeal the decision, however he received a letter from a barrister representing the AFL NSW/ACT Appeals board “basically ripping my argument to pieces”.

“To be honest I was in tears,” he told Jim Wilson on 2GB Drive.

“I thought I was a volunteer … all I’m doing is trying to get the kids out there and play some sport, and that’s how they’ve come about this.”
