The government is promising to fight legislation that threatens to water down Australia’s offshore processing of asylum seekers.

Independent MP Kerryn Phelps is leading the charge on a private member’s bill giving doctors a greater say on whether Nauru and Manus Island detainees are sent to Australia for treatment.

The Prime Minister has labelled the bill “stupid”, telling Alan Jones, “It’s written by people who haven’t got the faintest idea how this works”.

Retired Major General Jim Molan ran boat turnbacks through Operation Sovereign Borders before entering parliament.

The Liberal Senator tells Chris Smith this latest push “is about politicising border control”.
