Jessica Mauboy holds back tears in candid interview with Alan Jones

Jessica Mauboy has opened up about how the woman she was named after inspired her new album HILDA.

The beloved Australian singer joined Alan Jones in-studio ahead of the release of her fourth album next month.

She tells Alan the album’s title is also her middle name, which she was given in honour of the grandmother she never knew.

The album’s lead single Little Things is about her grandmother’s early death and her mother’s struggle to grow up without her.

Jess says she got very emotional when she asked her mum why she decided to give her the name Hilda.

“She said ‘well I looked at you after giving birth to you and I saw my mother. I saw my mother’s face’.

“I think that really struck me, I remember being in tears.”

Even as she spoke about the story with Alan, Jess struggled to hold back tears during the interview.

“I just got teary just listening to that back.”
