Jersey Day: Have the talk around organ donation today

Every year schools and workplaces around the nation don their favourite sporting jerseys in a bid to raise awareness for organ donation.

August 31 is Jersey Day and is inspired by the story of little Nathan Gremmo who was tragically lost in an accident in May 2015.

Nathan’s family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour the legacy of the 13-year-old’s generous personality.

The uncle of this inspirational little boy, Richard Gremmo, has told Ray Hadley “he was just such an awesome kid and just so generous”.

“Jersey Day is the continuation of his spirit of wanting to give to others and spread the message”.

“And that’s what today is all about, it’s not about raising money, it’s about raising awareness,” says Ray.

“I make no apology for donating so much time to this it’s just so important… while we’re good, decent people in this country we’ve got a very poor record when it comes to organ donation.”

DonateLife CEO Lucinda Barry agrees with Ray, saying Australians really need to have the conversation with their friends and families and sign up to the Australia Organ Donor Register.

“We just need people to take the one minute… and go and register,” Ms Barry tells Ray.
