A man who escaped from a prison on the state’s north coast almost 30 years ago has surrendered himself to police.

In August of 1992, a 35-year-old man escaped from a correctional centre at Grafton.

Police say the man used tools including a hacksaw blade and bolt cutters to free himself.

On Sunday, almost 30 years later, the man, now aged 64, attended Dee Why Police Station and handed himself in to police.

He’s been charged and refused bail.
