Jacinda Ardern announces ban on all semi-automatic weapons used in terrorist attack

New Zealand is set to ban all assault rifles just six days after 50 people were killed in a terrorist attack on mosques in Christchurch.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a ban on all military-style semi-automatic weapons, assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.

She will also introduce a gun buyback scheme, similar to the one implemented by the Howard government after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

Former Australian deputy prime minister Tim Fischer was part of that government.

He tells Ben Fordham his advice to Ms Ardern would be to ignore the voices of American gun fanatics.

“[She should] stand up to the static that she will get from the National Rifle Association of the USA.”

He says the announcement is a good step but the legislation will determine the success of the ban.

“The devil will be in the detail of the implementation.”
