ABC host Leigh Sales is set to depart the public broadcaster’s evening current affairs program tonight after 12 years at the helm.

The Walkley Award-winning journalist joined the ABC in 1995 and prior to hosting 7.30 she was a news reporter.

Sales told Ben Fordham she is walking away from the role due to her wanting to spend more time with her sons.

“It’s exciting because I’m very confident that it’s the right time,” she said.

“I just feel like it’s time after 12 years to explore some new challenges.”
