Is Australia still the lucky country?

Article image for Is Australia still the lucky country?

For the past 60 years, there has been one name at the forefront of social commentary, reflecting the pulse of the nation.

Hugh Mackay is a social researcher and the author of 17 books and taps into what Australians are really thinking through his research.

For the launch of his new book  Australia Reimagined, Hugh joined Chris Smith for a wide-ranging interview.

Chris asked are we really happy in Australia and are we still the lucky country or are we just existing in a disconnected society?

According to Hugh, the “Me Culture” has fragmented our society.

“The large majority of Australians think they are doing ok but they don’t think Australia is doing ok,” he said.

It’s a thought-provoking interview that also explores our increased frustration with once trusted institutions like the banks, the church and the increased ‘savagery’ towards politicians.
