In some parts of Sydney today, the mercury has hit over 40 degrees. So what is the best way to keep cool?

Dr Ollie Jay from the University of Sydney, says fans are a cheap and effective way to keep cool in the soaring temperatures.

“Electric fans are about 50 times cheaper than using an air con.

“TheĀ evaporation of our sweat cools us down the most. Extra airflow [from a fan] across the skin helps the sweat evaporate much quicker.”

In highly humid environments, Dr Jay suggests wetting a towel or sponge to speed up the cooling process.
