The Christmas and New Year double demerit period has kicked off and NSW Police is asking for people to be extra cautious this year.

The double demerit period will last until 11.59 pm on Wednesday, January 1.

Motorists caught for speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences during this time will cop double the demerit points.

Officers will also be targeting other poor driver behaviours, including drink-and-drug-driving.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy tells John Stanley they have an important message for drivers this year.

“This year we’re really sending the message out about fatigue.

“We’re going to manage the making sure people don’t drink-and-drive and speed, but we’re really asking the public for their help in managing their fatigue.”
