An independent report into the Opal Tower fiasco has been released, finding significant flaws.

The NSW government commissioned report follows an eight-week investigation by three of the state’s top engineers.

The report found design and construction failings which breached national standards.

Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, Matt Kean tells Chris Smith, “I’m absolutely appalled about what was found in the report”.

“This situation with people moving into what was a new building… only to find that it’s not safe and it’s got major defects, is totally unacceptable”.

Minister Kean has announced the biggest overhaul of building laws in NSW history.

He says these reforms address many recommendations in today’s report including making sure “building practitioners are held accountable for the work that they actually do”.

“These are huge reforms Chris, they’re well overdue but we are getting on with the job of implementing them.”

Meanwhile, Phil Dwyer, President of the Builders Collective of Australia, has told Ben Fordham, “we needed a proper outcome to this and we haven’t got it”.

“No one’s got the blame at the moment.

“We have this incredible fiasco of a situation disrupting the lives of so many people and yet we can’t even point fingers.

“We’ve got a crisis in the building industry.”
