‘If we could just produce more gas’: ACCC Chair calls for action

ACCC Chairman Rod Sims has taken aim at the east coast gas market as prices remain high, threatening manufacturing jobs.

Manufacturers such as Dow Chemical and Remapak both shut because of high gas prices making it difficult for them to operate in Australia.

Mr Sims tells Ross Greenwood he advised the government that Australia needs more gas companies in order to reduce prices.

“Clearly the $4 gas we used to have, the bad news is that won’t come back and there’s nothing anybody can do about that.

“If we could just produce more gas… we may be able to keep some of these manufacturing companies.

“What we don’t want is plants leaving the country that don’t have to. That would be a tragedy.”
