‘I thanked him for retiring’: Andrew Johns’ cheeky sledge at Cameron Smith ahead of Origin clash

State of Origin III kicks off tonight at Suncorp Stadium and the New South Wales Blues are hungry for a clean sweep.

The Blues have already won the Origin series, beating the Queensland Maroons in a cliffhanger at ANZ Stadium on June 24.

They go into tonight’s clash as favourites, but the Maroons have their sights firmly set on sending captain Billy Slater off with a victory at home.

Rugby league immortal Andrew ‘Joey’ Johns tells Ben Fordham there’s nothing like playing at Suncorp Stadium but the Blues will use that to their advantage.

“It’s a positive that we’ve got so many players who haven’t played at Suncorp,” Joey tells Ben Fordham.

“We get Queensland at a great time. No Inglis, no Thurston, no Cronk… and no Cameron Smith.

“We’ve got them at a really good time and I expect New South Wales to aim right up tonight.”

Joey has also revealed how he approached Queensland legend Cameron Smith and thanked him for stepping away from Origin.

“I saw Cameron the other day, I thanked him for retiring.

“I classify him as the best player I’ve ever seen. He’s probably the big reason why they’ve won so many of those series the last 12 years. He’s some player.”
