Howard slams Coalition split – ‘I’m puzzled as to why it even happened’

Former Prime Minister John Howard has condemned the Nationals’ decision to walk away from the Liberal Party, calling it a “stupid move” that undermines the Coalition’s ability to offer a unified alternative to Labor.
In a wide-ranging interview, Howard acknowledged the Nationals’ right to stand on principle but questioned the timing, motives, and logic behind splitting before the Liberals could regroup post-election.
“Large amounts of common sense from both parties and a recognition that, divided, they will surely go backwards… is needed.
“I’m puzzled as to why this has happened, I wish it hadn’t, and I just hope that both parties’ leaders understand that short-term advantages are irrelevant against long-term disadvantage.”
