Sydney Water is trialling new technology that “listens out” for breaks in water pipes.

Head of Engineering and Tech Support Allison Spicer told Deborah Knight the process includes workers using acoustic sensors throughout the CBD to detect any issues in pipes.

“The harvest data that we receive from the sensors … classifies the signals and predicts what thoughts of failure we are likely to see from a break or leak detection.”

The new technology is now helping workers understand how much water can be lost in pipes and how to rectify the issue.
