How do you play the Gumleaf?

Article image for How do you play the Gumleaf?

Have you ever wondered if you could play a certain wind instrument?

The Gumleaf is a wind instrument that comes with a steep learning curve. Beginners usually struggle to make any sound at all and due to the essential oils characteristic of eucalypts, users experience a strong taste of resin after blowing just a few notes.

To be used the leaf is held against the lips with the fingers and acts as a vibrating valve when blown.

Artist & Musician Herb Patten told Deborah Knight to play it, you need to fold the leaf under the top lip and let it poke out.

“Your cheeks have to be rigid and structured and not blow out like you’re blowing out a candle.”
