How a festival pays tribute to the famous whale ‘Old Tom’

Michael McLaren

The annual Eden Whale Festival is returning once again to New South Wales.

The festival celebrates the southern migration of the humpback and other whales and allows individuals to get up close and personal with the magnificent animals.

Located on the NSW Sapphire Coast, Eden dives into the history of whales and its unspoilt coastal wilderness.

Chair of Eden Tourism Lana Wills explained to Deborah Knight how the museum pays tribute and tells the history of the famous whale ‘Old Tom’.

‘Old Tom’ was thought to be the leader of a pod of killer whales which helped the whalers by herding baleen whales into Twofold Bay.

“If you are here and are visiting head to the museum because ‘Old Tom’ has tear marks in his teeth as he used to grab the ropes of the whaling boats and tow them out to where the whales were because they weren’t quick enough with their rowing.”
