Professor Ross Menzies and Dr Rachel Menzies told Deborah Knight death is behind a lot more than people realise, down to society’s fixation with sport.

People who build legacies are in some way extending their influence beyond their death, Professor Menzies said.

“Nationalism is driven by our tribalism and our wanting to belong to something that exists beyond the self.

“Our nation state, right down to the sporting teams we follow, to be part of something that was there before us and is there after us.”
