Hospital workers will strike after hero security guard unfairly sacked
Hospital workers will go on strike this afternoon, in support of a security guard sacked following a violent incident at Wollongong Hospital.
Management claimed the guard used excessive force against a patient in the mental health unit, using CCTV footage to fire him.
But the union says a third camera angle, that wasn’t viewed by management, clearly shows the patient lunging at a nurse, and the guard stepping in to help.
In a latter to Ray Hadley, the union says it will take action if the guard isn’t given his job back by the end of the day.
“If Mr Tilley is not reinstated by Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District by this afternoon, HSU members across the district will be imposing work bans.”
HSU NSW Secretary Gerard Hayes tells Ray Hadley the situation is unacceptable.
“Our other members are so outraged by this situation that they’re at the point of taking work bans this afternoon.
“In saying that, I’ll just make sure that all patients in the Wollongong Hospital will be looked after. There’ll be no band affecting them.”
