All is not as it seems in renowned comedian and writer HG Nelson’s new book The Fairytale.

The author explained to Deborah Knight his history of Australian sport is interested more in the popular imagination than accuracy.

“The reader … has to make up their mind what’s real and what’s imagined; some facts are true, some aren’t.”

Mr Nelson already has ideas for a sequel, he revealed, featuring fairytales from surfing and motorsport among other disciplines.

“I’m hoping to get a ‘part two’!”
