A woman in her 80s has been confirmed as the first death of the NSW flood crisis. Her body was found in a flooded Lismore home by a concerned neighbour.

SES Deputy Commissioner Daniel Austin told Jim Wilson the news is shocking and sad.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends and the Lismore community.

“This is a highly… catastrophic event.”

The intense weather that has caused a flood emergency on the north coast of NSW is on its way to Sydney.

Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Jordan Notara told Ben Fordham the intense rainfall will hit Sydney today.

“Through the later part of this evening and into Wednesday is where we’re going to be seeing persistent heavy rain, strong winds and large surf.”

Labor MP Janelle Saffin has told Ray Hadley the situation in Lismore is still intense.

“I’ve been through the floods for over 40 years here and I’ve never seen anything like this.

“Today we’re still rescuing people… they are still on roofs.”

NSW Vinnies Regional Director for the North East Clare van Doorn told Deborah Knight about the launch of their own flooding appeal.

Mark told Deborah Knight homes and businesses have been affected but nothing yet like Lismore.

“The risk here is another high tide tomorrow.

“We’re still in that everybody get out there and help sort of mode.”
