Temperatures of more than 40 degrees are predicted across NSW, the ACT, Victoria and South Australia over the weekend.

Steve Price speaks with Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg ahead of the heat wave, discussing whether the energy grid will cope.

“We have advice from the Australian Energy Market Operator that the system will be able to cope, although this will be a real test for it because you’ve got consecutive hot days.

A number of unprecedented actions have been taken over the last 12 months to prepare for these challenges, including bringing on three gas-fired power stations that were previously mothballed.

“We’ve also ensured that the maintenance schedules are up to scratch and we’ve ensured the guarantee of supply of gas.”
