Health Minister threatens to shut non-compliant nursing homes

Health Minister Greg Hunt warns nursing homes that don’t comply with mandatory flu vaccines could be shut down.

The Federal Government is making it mandatory for aged care facilities to offer the vaccine to their workers for free in a bid to prevent a repeat of last year’s deadly flu season.

1,100 Australians died from the flu in 2017 with 90% of those killed above 65-years-old.

Minister Greg Hunt tells Alan Jones, employees who refuse the vaccine are putting older Australians at risk.

“What’s likely is that the companies or the Not For Profits in many many cases will move the workers to other parts.

“Ultimately their responsibility is to ensure that it’s a safe environment for the residents.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that the residents are protected.

“The highest sanction is that we can close down facilities, remove their licence if it’s an unsafe environment for residents.”
