More than a hundred doctors have written a letter begging the government to transfer Julian Assange to an Australian hospital.

The 48-year-old Wikileaks founder is currently being held in Belmarsh Prison on the outskirts of London, pending US extradition hearings next year.

In an open letter, more than a hundred doctors say he “might die” in prison, having been subjected to “psychological torture”.

They are urging Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Prime Minister Scott Morrison to push for him to be brought back to Australia due to his rapidly declining health.

“Should Mr Assange die in a British prison, people will want to know what you, minister, did to prevent his death.”

Doctors have said Assange is suffering from depression, dental problems and a shoulder injury.
