Harnessing the power of music to help dementia patients

An Australian startup is aiming to use music therapy to help those living with dementia.

Bupa has partnered with Aussie startup Music Health to use a digital tool in order to improve the lives of dementia patients in their care.

The app, Vera, deploys personalised music, curating the perfect song at the right time for every individual listener.

Co-founder Stephen Hunt told Deborah Knight the music brings people back in time to a certain point in their life.

“By just asking a few simple questions about a person … we can curate three specific playlists that will find the soundtracks from these people’s past.

“The music, when it’s personally significant to someone with dementia, it actually stimulates the long term memory and that creates a jumpstart for the rest of the brain.”
