Within three months, Australian online shoppers will be hit with a new tax in a bid to help local retailers.

10% GST will be imposed on overseas online goods from July 1, with the so-called “protectionist tariff” slapped on items worth less than $1,000.

Harvey Norman Chairman Gerry Harvey says it’s been an uphill battle for Aussie companies for years.

“This was supposed to happen ten years ago,” he tells Ben Fordham.

“This was supposed to happen last year. Then they were lobbied by the lobbyists… so they put it off for another year.”

“Why would you give a free kick to overseas? It’s obviously not fair.”
