Growing calls to cap Super Netball imports amid bleak prospects for Aussie players

There are growing calls to introduce a cap on international players in Australian netball, with local players squeezed out of contracts.

Goal shooter Caitlin Bassett has returned home after being “treated like a celebrity” while playing for New Zealand’s Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic

She told Bill Woods she could be waiting a long time for an opportunity to pop up with a local team.

“Netball Australia want to have the best competition in the world, and they don’t have a cap on imports.

“Unfortunately some of the best players in the world happen to be 6ft 6, 6ft 7 Jamaican and South African shooters.”

While Bassett is unsure what her future holds, she’s willing to do “whatever it takes” to be an Australian Diamond, even forgoing pay and moving back in with family.

“If it’s taking up a training partner at a club, I’m willing to put my hand up and go back to square one.”
