‘Grief exploited’: Funeral director quotes $40,000 for burial

It is possible that people are being exploited in their grief, after a listener was recently quoted $40,000 to bury his son at Rookwood Cemetery.

“That is daylight robbery,” said Ben Fordham.

There are graves available for between $10,000 and $15,000, but other sections can be more expensive, and on top of that, cemetery space in Sydney is running out.

The state government received a report in 2021, finding that its Crown Land cemetery operators had combined debts of $300 million, warning of a “financial collapse”.

The new Minister in charge of Crown Land, Stephen Kamper, told Ben Fordham that he is “determined to provide a fresh start”.
