NSW Minister rejects scrapping of shark nets this summer

A shark attack in Coffs Harbour is in the spotlight as NSW councils consider removing shark nets.

A great white shark bit a paddler’s outrigger canoe in half last Wednesday morning.

But a number of councils are lobbying the state government to get rid of shark nets.

The latest push comes from the Mayor of Waverley Council and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch.

NSW Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders told Ben Fordham the removal of nets is “not appropriate” at this point in time.

“Let’s not use it as some sort of political weaponry right now … we don’t want to put people’s lives at risk.”
