Grace periods introduced for parking tickets, but only in some Sydney councils

The rush back to the car before the parking ticket expires will be a little less stressful with a grace period introduced.

From Thursday, parking officers will wait ten minutes after the paid ticket expires before writing out the fine.

The state government is also urging councils to reduce parking fines from $112 to $80.

So far, 18 councils and five universities have signed up to that measure, which will be introduced from March.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet says the grace period won’t compromise road safety.

He tells Ben Fordham it’s also about aking “fines fair and reasonable”.
