The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has raised the travel warning for Australians going to Hong Kong.

The decision was made as protests in the area continue to escalate, prompting a strong police crackdown.

DFAT is now warning Australians to exercise a high degree of caution if travelling to the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne spoke exclusively to Ray Hadley, telling him she’s warning all Australians in the area to be on high alert.

“Monitor local media for signs of unrest, avoid protests and large gatherings because they are unpredictable, and to follow all the instructions of local authorities.”
