‘Genuine effort or excuse?’ – Tax round table a chance for the Government to be more ambitious

Experts are questioning if Jim Chalmer’s tax round-table will do anything meaningful as experts hope for the first significant tax reform since the GST was introduced.
Australian Financial Review economics editor John Kehoe has questioned whether the round table is a genuine effort to reform the system.
“Or is it going to end up as a bit of a tax grab and just an excuse to raise taxes to plug the budget deficit?” he told Mark Levy.
Mr Kehoe also says the round table is a chance for the government to prove they’re being more ambitious in their second term.
“This is worth a shot, because we really haven’t had a treasurer (since Peter Costello)… tackle the big issue of tax reform,” he added.
