Free agency period ripe with opportunity as ‘marketable’ NRL stars come off contract
NRL clubs are being warned not to waste any time signing the league’s biggest names over the next fortnight, with a new club joining the competition.
Around 160 players are coming off contract after next season, and new 17th club the Dolphins will be vying for players in 2023.
Sharks legend Paul Gallen welcomed the period, telling Bill Woods “it’s good for rugby league … in the off season”.
“It’s not only one of the biggest, but it’s also one of the best groups of talent we’ve had coming off contract for a long, long time.”
Fullback Kalyn Ponga is reported to be particularly in demand, with the Dolphins bidding to take him from the Newcastle Knights.
“Not only is he a quality player, but … he’s just a very, very marketable person.”
