A former Home and Away actor has been charged after allegedly bashing a female police officer in Sydney’s inner suburbs.

Police say a group of officers had arrested a man on Rutland Street at Surry Hills for minor property-related offences at 11.15am on Tuesday when they were approached by a 46-year-old man.

He’s been identified as Australian actor Joel McIlroy, who had nothing to do with the original incident and was told to move on by police.

Instead, he allegedly shoulder-charged a female senior constable and punched her repeatedly as officers tried to arrest him.

Mr McIlroy and two officers fell to the ground during the struggle before a member of the public jumped in to help get him under control.

The 29-year-old officer was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital after suffering injuries to her face, neck and shoulder.

Mr McIlroy has been charged with two counts of assaulting an officer in the execution of their duty, resisting an officer in the execution of their duty, and wilfully obstructing an officer in execution of their duty.

He’s been refused bail and will face court today.
